Why Progress Beats Perfection in Your Startup’s Marketing Strategy

Start Now, Refine Later: The Path to Sustainable Growth in Small Business

The journey of an entrepreneur is fraught with challenges. I’ve had the privilege of working with numerous small business startups, crafting compelling copy for their websites and promotional  materials. And I’ve learned a thing or two in the process.

You don’t need to answer every marketing question before you launch. Figure things out as you go.

While every business is different, I’ve discovered that one common thread weaves through these experiences: a fear of making the wrong marketing move.

  • Which audience should I target?
  • How can I differentiate my business in a crowded industry?
  • What products or services should I prioritize?
  • How should I set my pricing?
  • Where should I direct my marketing dollars?

These questions can feel overwhelming. They’re enough to make any business owner hesitate. My advice? Don’t let uncertainty paralyze you. Over-thinking every move is a form of procrastination. And while procrastination may mitigate your immediate risk, it does nothing to contribute to your future success.

The best way to learn is by doing. And the best day to begin on that journey is today. Dive in. Take action. Adapt as you go.

That’s what I did with my copywriting business, which I started over two decades ago. I had a wealth of self-doubt but didn’t let that stop me. I kept my fears to myself and figured things out as I went along. I took chances. I made mistakes. I learned. Most importantly, I kept going. And you can too.

Keep moving forward. Your path will become clearer with every step you take.

Even the most well-thought-out marketing strategy is still a forecast based on today’s realities. You’re using today’s landscape and your current experience level to predict the future. The horizon may shift, and then so will you. Focus on these objectives as you forge ahead:

  • Discover emerging trends that could reshape your industry.
  • Gain clarity on what fuels your success and drains your resources.
  • Turn early missteps into valuable lessons and course corrections.
  • Identify new opportunities that weren’t visible before.
  • Become a wiser, more confident leader.
  • Chart a clearer, more informed path forward.

Businesses, like people, evolve with time and experience. Success isn’t a destination; it’s a journey marked by growth and refinement. Keep pushing forward, one step at a time.

Continuous improvement should be the goal. Aim for progress, not perfection, and the rewards will soon follow.
